Fixing cars for neighbors question?
Fixing cars for neighbors question?
As a person, i sometimes dont mind doing auto repairs for friends, and neighbors. I like to help people out. I just dont like when they cheap out on parts. For example: If i did a brake job, i would like to do it my way, and get 100 percent of parts it really needs. This would prevent future problems later. Anybody agree with me?
Answers:
SoHx: I totally agree with that. Things like gaskets, lubes, and stuff should be part of the package.

hicksvilleny: Definetly agree. But you gotta give the customer what they want. For example like you said break jobs. You cant just replace the drums without the shoes. If you tell your neighbor that you should change both and he/she said no just the drums, then do what the customer says but give him a warning that its not a good idea

scrapper4point0: They're probably getting a great deal on labor cost, so I would only do the job if I could do it my way. Don't skimp when it comes to the safety of the vehicle.

mel: yeah. that's why many folks don't do these types of repairs just to "help people out".
you'd be responsible if there was a brake failure, and you know that.

Howmany?: Agreed, but the best thing to do is let them take it where they need to and not do their repairs. Offer your input or go along with them to make sure they don't get screwed. This is the only way to stay in good rapport.

dont ask: 100% all the way. Well I cheated a guy once. He wanted his brakes done so I went to the wrecking yard and found some good ones. Yea I slapped them onto his car and charged him allot for labor and parts. Old days wouldn't do that now

trickyschum: Helping anyone out with car repairs and doing it right is always a good thing. Just don't lose money doing it. If they want it done explain that they should get the best parts for the best performance. I heard a saying once that might be relevant. "Just remember, watch out who you tell you're a doctor" hope you get it!

goFord52: Some people, it comes natural for them to use other people
If your neighbor went to a Mechanic shop, he wouldn't be able to tell them ie " replace the pads but don't cut the rotors"
good luck .... keep so busy that you don't have time for neighbors cars!

Ironball: I totaly agree. Doing half a job makes no job. And it's a way to lose friends.
