Rich Z:  In many states if it does not pass the state's safety inspection (including running efficiently and not having seriously worn mechanical parts) you are entitled to get your money back because it is illegal to sell a car in that condition.

If you bought something that has taken a serious beating in an accident then "as-is" means you just got suckered. you can't get your money back or even take it to court. "as is" means you accepted it with all problems too. replacing the engine really isn't so hard. get a chiltons and follow the instructions.

vwhobo:  Face it. A car is a mechanical thing and mechanical things break. More to the point, you bought a car you thought was worth $5,000 for $500 (or something of that nature) and thought you got over on the previous owner. I guaran-damn-tee it. Obviously you didn't. Any car can be mechanically repaired if you want to spend the $$$, so either your "mechanic" is a liar or you weren't paying attention when he was talking. Bottom line is unless you have a contract or written warranty, used cars are sold between private parties AS IS. Either find a competent mechanic to take care of the repairs or dump the car and start fresh. Consider it a cheap lesson in life.

A private sale is as-is, where-is, how-is, and any other is you can think of, unless the seller gave you a WRITTEN warranty. You bought a car. You did not have it checked prior to purchase. You now find that the car is not what you thought it was, and want to blame someone else for your foolishness in not having it checked out prior to your purchase. You have the right to take responsibility for your choices! Fix the car or sell it and try to recoup some of your money! Sorry!!

country girl:  You should have had the mechanic look at the car BEFORE you bought it. You will probably have no case but you could try small claims court just to see how far you get.
