tabloms:  check your PVC valve and make sure it in working order.PVC valve if its not working will allow pressure to build in the valve cover and cause the valve cover to leak oil (the smoke) and yes the pressure can cause the car to shut down

Boston Bluefish:  In a 92 Lincoln, it will be your valve lifters, they are loose and need adjustment. This is hard to do at home, and needs a mechanic. The reason you are getting smoke, is that exhaust gas is escaping around the loose valves, and filling the crankcase, eventually escaping into the engine compartment.

bobweb:  You may have run low on engine oil in which case you can hear the valves tapping. I always knew I had let the oil go too low when I heard the valves start to tick or tap. If the "smoke" you saw wasn't actually steam from a ruptured coolant line, then it was probably engine oil leaking from the valve covers or elsewhere onto the hot exhaust manifold and burning up. So the engine might be both leaking oil and burning oil to some extent which means you'll have to top off the oil more often so that the valves don't get starved for oil lubrication. Of course, also check the PCV system and engine for signs of oil leakage.
