j e:  Could be a couple of things. Loose rocker arm,Low oil, crack in your air intake. If its only doing it at acceleration i would first check the oil level.You can also spray a can of starting fluid on the intake with the car running,If the idle increases you have a leak. I would take this in to have it checked could be a sign of bigger problems.

ems_fire_rescue_ks:  Check your drive shaft and rear U-Joint...whatever you do, don't spray ether (starting fluid) onto the intake...that's stupid, don't worry about the guy who told you to, Darwin says he won't be around much longer.

mal75:  The engine is not receiveing enough gas try cleaning your fuel lines with a fuel cleaner from an auto store.

Meghan D:  Mine does this when it is very LOW on oil. (I am bad at getting my baby an oil change) I have a 1997 Ford Explorer also. Ticking on acceleration......been there done that. I have had it for 10 years. This is exactly what it starts doing when it is low. Put some oil in that baby and see if that works. Good luck!
