do you ask for a written estimate before repair?
Do you usually ask for a written estimate of how much a repair would cost before you authorize it, or do you just make an agreement in conversation? The paper I signed at the dealer's shop included a statement that says I waive the demand for written estimates, which I wasn't concerned about at the time but I now worry that it may be a costly repair.

amanda b: If the repairs are going to be over $500 they have to call you and let you know about the full repair bill. Never give away your power, because then they can make stuff up about what's wrong. I always ask to see the actuall part that was bad when they take it off to make sure it was actually replaced. I may be a female, but I am not stupid.

vacca724: ALWAYS
ALWAYS
ALWAYS get written estimates and be sure to only sign them when EVERYTHING is filled out.
dont get ripped off. a simple repair could be turned into a giant one.
and before any repairs. be sure to ask what is wrong. what parts. and possibly ask to SEE them yourself.

Kay: My car insurance agent wants 3 written estimates. Considering the money I save when I have to have repairs, I am not in the least upset over the extra leg-work to save hundreds of dollars.
