I got a repair estimate for my 98 Blazer. Is it a fair deal?
I'm always worried about taking my vehicle in because I know so little about cars, I worry about being ripped off. I went to Midas and got an estimate. They plan to replace the idler arm ($65.99), pitman arm (72.99) and reset the toe. Labor $305.59 Shop supply $31.00 Tax $11.90 Total Estimate $487.47

HandyMan:  Sounds like a fair price to me, if it REALLY needs those parts replaced. To be sure, go get a second opinion at another shop, and see if they tell you the same thing. In my experience, If the idler and Pittman arms need replacing, the tie rods won't be far behind.

campmano:  well compred to how long i know this will take, even compared to the book, the slowest mechanic in the world could do this in two hours. thats 150.00 dollars an hour labor. the parts sure sound fair, but the labor sounds high.

newb:  Since you already know what needs to be replaced on your car, I would call other repair shop and ask them how much they charge to replace those parts. You'll be surprise how competative other repair facility can be just to keep business in there shop. And make sure you ask for your old parts, it's one way of knowing that they really replaced what they supposed to replace.

oldcutlas:  sounds pretty fair to me..... I recently replaced my idler arm on my 92 blazer and paid around 50 for the part....I would talk them into doing a full alignment for the price they gave you though!!!

bill l:  the labour cost is too high. also i don't trust most chain repair shops. i would ask people you know or just anyone if they know of a good honest mechanic . i asked a taxi driver that question once when my car broke down and wow this mechanic has saved me really in the thousands of dollars.
