My car is making a thump/clunking sound as slowing down, ticking at high speeds from front left wheel area? ?
I also get squeaks from the brakes when coming to a stop. How do I make sure that the problem is in the brakes and not the transmission?? I put the car in neutral when driving and still hear the ticking sound, is that enough to rule out the transmission?? Thanks

cool d:  brake pads are worn out sounds like your rotors are messed up, too

Gordon:  CHECK YOUR LUG NUTS!! I had this problem and the lug nuts that hold the wheel on were loose. It can also be a problem with the CV joint in the front drive shaft.

heatherblack1027:  popping the transmission into neutral is a good way to eliminate the transmission as the cause- sounds ot me like its a cv axle problem for the tick the brake squeak is just that could be caused by a rock in the calipers or could be worn out pads.

noncomputerwiz:  Your brake pads and rotors are worn out. It's not your transmission.

Big Deal Maker:  Check to see if you have picked up a nail in the tire first. Or a screw. If there is no nail or screw in the tire. Then look at your brakes as the next possible solution to the problem.
