Our DELL computer suffered water damage during a storm. Where's the best place to take it for repair estimate?
Computer was on the floor (we were moving around furniture) - came home to a few inches of water on the floor & computer was in direct contact with water coming in through the ceiling ... will not properly turn on - makes "clicking" sound; hums a bit ... We live in Atlanta so I'm looking for local suggestions and/or "big box" retailer suggestions. Thanks!

Tyler P: Well, I Reccomend you get an HP brand of computer. Dell is very very low quality products, and I'm quite sure your computer is possessed. Dell is shit. Dell's always fuck up. I had a dell and i woke up and the screen was gone. It's very unusual I say. But, HP's are the best.

Mordred: How old is your computer? While computers are rediculously easy to repair and often fairly cheap if you know what you are doing the amount most repair places will charge you might better go to a new computer if yours if more than a few years old ( that is if you would be looking to up grade it in a year or two anyway.)
If you have any technical aptitude you might want to try repairing it yourself.. If it was sitting in only an inch or two of water you might start by opening the case and seeing what parts would have gotten wet. if you didn't short anything out by trying to turn it on, those parts are probably the only ones that need replacing. It could even be that if you open it up and dry it well, it will work just fine. You will see that most of the parts simply plug into the board. Take them out, dry it with a hair dryer, (low heat) plug everything back in and try it again.
IF the computer you are useing now is the dame type, you may want to test some of the parts in it. Put the hard drive from the "bad" one in the good one as a second drive and copy any important files you really need to save.
If you do go to a repair place, try to get a recommendation and watch as your computer is repaired. Unfortunatly many repair places, particularly the "big box" places have often been accused of copying your hard drive to keep whatever they want for themselves, your music, porn, whatever, possibly even personal information that could be used in identity theft.
Good luck.

mountainriley: Once you turned it on it was toast. Had it been dried out first there was some hope. Check with your home owners insurance. HP is good but you have to get what you can afford. If you could afford it, get a MAC. Then you wouldn't have to deal with Vista.

M M T: First check with your homeowners/tenant policy to see if your damages to your computer and other things are covered. It's a good possibility they are.
Best Buy offers a free 15 minute diagnostic on troubled machines. In most cases, in 15 minutes, they can give you a pretty good idea. However, water and computers are not a good mix and I would bet that the unit is toast.
Tell the Geeks exactly what happened and see what their suggestions are. Bear in mind, that even if you do get it working now, the exposure to the water can make problems show up later.

J: I am going to try and answer this as the question is posed. It's obvious that you need help - not being computer literate, so the best place will be either a computer whizz-kid friend who builds his or her own computers as a hobby, or a small one-man retail shop that will diagnose the issue in 1/2 an hour. Diagnosis is as simple as testing each component one by one by exchange with known good parts. If the computer is more than say 3 years old, and the motherboard is fried, then it's probably best to get it upgraded or just buy a new one.

pcbeachrat: You will have to replace the hard drive, mother board and most of the cards/memory/usb/video/audio etcetera..Unless a very expensive computer it is going to be cheaper to buy another one than to replace all of these componants. Basically just about every componant in it was drenched especially since not only did you have standing water on it, but you had a constant overhead source of water raining down on it from above.I have seen some salvaged with a minimum of expense when standing in a couple inches of water, but one that virtually had a "waterfall" flowing over it for hours/days..Total replacement is more than likely cheaper...Hopefully you had homeowners insurance
