did I get a fair estimate for my repair?
did I get a fair estimate for my repair?
I went in an got an estimate for a brake repair.
It was to machine warped roters in the front and replace front pads.
WIth parts and labor it came out to be $235.
do you think that's a fair price for the job?

deljack05: Let me tell you something. If you can remember how you take something apart, and I mean a simple thing. You could do the brakes on your car for 1/3 that much. They are so simple to do. You could get rotors for about 30 dollars apiece and the and the pads are about 20 dollars. You could afford a Haynes manual and they explain the job in great detail. Just a thought. I always thought they really over prices a break job.

STANSELL: please give the year make and model 2x4 or 4x4. brake jobs vary depending on the vehicle the rotors have a minimum thickness so when they are turned you may have to replace them. rotors and pads very on price according to quality and make of car.

Bri: To cut and replace rotors it's really not that bad but...if it was me and for a bit more money i might just go with new rotors and get the job done right.
Car type is unknown here.
Cutting rotors is okay IF you have enough thickness left on them only a micrometer will tell the mechanic that, not just looking at them.,it can be very hard to get out high spots since often the cut has to go deep to smooth them out and still...they can warp quicker after that plus you don't want the rotor to get too thin, that's not good at all !
Heat is a big killer on rotors so the faster they can cool off the better and thinner get hotter faster thusly can warp faster again.
You don't have to get the top of the line rotors,a good mid range rotor is fine and will last alot longer.
I know on my 2005 impala my rotors only cost about $330.00 with new ceramic pads, installation per axle, that's not a bad price here in northern illinois!
Shop,vehicle,type of pad,etc all effect cost's.
Often if you ask for a price on new rotors/pads you might find that it's not that much more to get it done.

Howard L: It's a fair price for turning the rotors and if they are putting in OEM quality pads. It's probably high for a cheap set of brake pads. Demand OEM quality. Depending on which car you have there could be a $100 price difference between a "bargain basement" set of pads and an OEM quality set.
If they didn't remove the wheels and closely inspect the rotors and calipers don't be surprised if the rotors need to be replaced rather than merely turned. Sometimes they are warped or scored to badly to be turned. There could be other parts that need to be replaced. Not that they're cheating you. It's just that sometimes you find other things wrong after you get a better look. Be sure to get an estimate for the work after they remove the wheel and get a close look at what actually needs to be done if they haven't already done so.
See the link for a bit of an education about brakes.

A man: Yes it sounds fair to me here in NC. BUT, if you only knew how easy it is to do this yourself, i bet you would kick ur butt. Replacing disc pads and pulling rotors to have the turned is like nothing. Remove the tire, remove 2 pins for the caliper, pop out the pads, push the piston back in, pop in new pads. Rotors. Remove the dust cap, a cotter pin, and a nut. Pull. Taa daa. The outer wheel bearing will fall out. Take all to the shop for turning/shaving. They can pull the inner bearing and seal and and tell you how to put them back in and repack with grease. Really simple. Save alot of $$.
